We know we blow our own trumpet – but that’s because our coffee and customer service speaks for itself. But before you make a huge decision to decide what kind of wholesaler you’d like to work with, we’ve outlined six things to consider before you decide who’s right for you.
What colour are the beans when they arrive? If your beans are green, that means they haven’t been roasted yet and it’s a process you’ll have to do in-house. It’s important to know this especially if you don’t have resources available to roast them yourself. Moreover, even if they’re roasted, if they appear black and oily in nature, it’s a very dark roast and in some cases could taste too bitter for many customers to handle. Ideally the bag of coffee beans you receive should have an even colour tone.
Do you trust the supplier’s knowledge? A good supplier should be able to explain and answer any questions you might have. If you don’t feel confident in your wholesaler’s ability to provide you with the best coffee available, it’s time to find another supplier. They should be able to answer questions about the origins of the coffee they stock as well as what types of machines or brewing methods they work well in.
Do the prices match up? Because of issues with sourcing, different coffees might have various different price points. You should, however, speak with your proposed UK coffee wholesaler to see whether or not the cost of the coffee is because of the quality, or because of some marketing tactic.
Don’t just pick the cheapest. Although you should think carefully about choosing a super expensive wholesaler (unless they have a good reason for it to be way beyond average market costs, you should also avoid really cheap coffee. Building a sustainable coffee business at low price points is tough and often means that the people who work hard to pick the coffee beans aren’t paid a fair share
Contract. While it might seem exciting at first to sign a long contract with your proposed supplier, there are many UK coffee wholesalers who’ll first offer you wholesale prices without tying you into a contract. This way you can see if you like their coffee and their service and think about getting a contract at a later point.
Can you taste the coffee? It’s all well and good having words like “smooth” “heavy-bodied” scattered all over the site, but if the supplier won’t send you a sample for you to try, be cautious. It’s always good to taste the coffee you’re hoping to stock to make sure that it actually suits the needs of your business or your customers.
Now you know the things you should be thinking about, it’s time to start picking a supplier. If you’ve liked what you’ve seen on our website and have checked out our coffees, why not drop us an email so we can chat further.
We can’t wait to welcome you into the family!
